Shelby Lee Adams Creates Touching Portraits Of Appalachian Families. The Last Few Are Unforgettable

Photographer Shelby Lee Adams was born in Kentucky, and grew up in the back seat of his father’s car. He had a great interest in the families and characters living in the remote mountains of Appalachia, and set out to document the terrible poverty which swept the people of Appalachia, always with the great affection he felt for the people existing there.

Shelby’s images are compelling, stark and fascinating – putting the camera focus on a section of American society so often ridiculed or misunderstood by the mainstream media and Hollywood.

To find more of Shelby’s fascinating work, he has published several books of portraits which are superb – Appalachian Portraits, Shelby Lee Adams – Salt and Truth, Appalachian Lives and Appalachian Legacy.
